Fog in Sarajevo

A thick fog during December that caused irregularity and cancellation of numerous flights at Sarajevo Airport has finally cleared up, thus enabling normal air traffic. The fog is a result of the temperatures in the last month which exceeded their usual values and caused a temperature inversion that produced extensive cloudiness (e.g. temperature on surrounding mountains exceeded thos in Sarajevo valley).
Statistical data of Sarajevo Airport for the period from 20.11.2006 till 20.12.2006 show that 130 flights out of 456 ones (both civil scheduled and charter flights) were cancelled due to low visibility. Minimum general visibility for undisturbed landing of aircraft at Sarajevo Airport is 800 m, while take-off requires minimum 400 m. This condition has often been unfulfilled recently. Speaking from the meteorologist's point of view, fogs and low visibility are not unusual for this time of year. Having in mind the forthcoming holidays, increased number of passengers and operations, we truly hope that these problems will not repeat (weather forecasts are optimistic, too).
